NEW DELHI: In some good news for cricket enthusiasts of both India and Pakistan, sources told TIMES NOW on Wednesday (June 30) that bilateral cricket ties between the two countries could well resume soon. The resumption of bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan reportedly came up for discussion between the leaders of the two countries on the sidelines of the recent foreign secretary level meeting. The issue is also likely to be discussed during the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) annual meeting in Singapore. Well-placed sources in the Pakistan government said that the Indian government has given a nod to the Board of Cricket Control India (BCCI) to renew cricketing ties, which were called off in the wake of November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. "It is now up to the respective boards to negotiate on the formalities of the Test series. Most probably the series between the two countries would be played any time in the coming season," the source said. Speaking to TIMES NOW, former Pakistani cricketer Zaheer Abbas welcomed the move and said, "This is good news for all of us. We would love to play against the Indians. People in Pakistan are happy with the same. However, I feel games should be played in Pakistan and India and not rely on neutral venues, keeping in mind the interest of the fans. Currently India is doing well and it will help both the team to improve, if they face each other." Even though there has never been an official ban on bilateral cricket ties between the two Asian giants, the political situation and security concerns had prevented cricketing ties from being normal.

SINGAPORE: Former Australia prime minister John Howard has failed in his bid to become the next vice-president of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The 70-year-old Howard had been nominated for the position by Cricket Australia (CA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC), who have been asked to put forward another candidate by the ICC.

The decision was made on Wednesday at the week-long ICC executive board meeting in Singapore.

"Following lengthy consideration it was recognised that the nomination put forward by Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket did not have sufficient support within the ICC Board. No vote was taken," the sport's governing body said in a statement.

"Under the ICC's regional rotation process... Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket were invited to re-nominate a candidate by August 31, 2010."

Under ICC rules, the vice-president would serve for two years then become president in 2012.

CA and NZC issued a joint statement after the announcement expressing their disappointment at the decision.

"We jointly nominated Mr Howard as a candidate as he possesses significant leadership and administrative skills," CA chairman Jack Clarke and NZC chairman Alan Isaac said in the statement.

"We believe cricket needs to continue to seek excellence and dispassionate independence in the game's global governance.

"We remain convinced it is reasonable for his nomination to be supported by the ICC Executive Board and we are deeply disappointed by the position taken at today's meeting."

The nomination of Howard, who lost the 2007 Australian federal election and retired from politics, had been contentious with earlier newspaper reports indicating that six of the 10 major cricket nations at the Singapore meeting had signed a letter opposing him as a candidate.

Only Australia, New Zealand and England had supported him, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian reported on their websites.

In the weeks leading up to the Singapore gathering, the Australian media suggested Howard would struggle to seal the nomination.

One of the reasons given was his criticism of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe's regime when he was Australian Prime Minister, with both South Africa and Zimbabwe expected not to give him support.

Sri Lanka cricket authorities had also expressed reservations about his nomination because he did not have the necessary cricketing administrative background.

He also won few friends in Sri Lanka after he questioned the bowling action of test wicket record holder Muttiah Muralitharan.

Howard was also the subject of a public battle between CA and NZC for the nomination, with New Zealand wanting to nominate their former chairman John Anderson for the position before they agreed to Howard.

'Google AdWords lack transparency'

BRUSSELS: France's antitrust regulator accused Google of a 'lack of transparency' over its keyword advertising service and ordered it to clarify conditions for the product within four months.

The Autorite de la Concurrence was responding to a complaint filed by French GPS data services company Navx in February, which alleged that the world's top search engine had abused its dominant position by scrapping Navx's AdWords contract.

"Google has implemented the content policy of its AdWords service in a way which lacks objectivity and transparency, resulting in a discriminatory treatment of speed camera database suppliers," the regulator said in a statement.

It ordered Google Ireland and Google Inc to clarify within four months the scope and impact of the AdWords conditions applicable to devices aimed at evading traffic speed cameras and said Navx's AdWords account should be restored within five days.

SMS services blocked in J&K

JAMMU: SMS services have been blocked in entire Jammu and Kashmir, a day after it was stopped in north Kashmir, an official said.

"We received a communique from the home department of the state government to block SMS services across Jammu and Kashmir. We have acted accordingly," a service provider told IANS.

On Tuesday, the government blocked SMS services in north Kashmir.

The services were blocked after protesters, who were angered by the killings in firing by police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the Valley, defied curfew and attempted to damage religious places.

The SMS services have been blocked to prevent the "anti-national and vested interests from spreading trouble. The SMS services were being misused", a government official said.

Eight youths have been killed in mob violence in the state.

In 2008 too the state government suspended the SMS services during the Amarnath land row agitation.

Again in 2009 the ministry of home affairs blocked pre-paid mobile services for more than two months.

Apple hiring antenna engineers

Apple iPhone 4
NEW DELHI: Apple may not have accepted the antenna glitch in just released fourth-generation iPhone, but the company is all set to hire antenna engineers. As the company’s recent job openings show. Apple has posted job requirement for antenna engineers in its job database.

Reports began making the rounds on the Web on June 24 saying that the iPhone 4 could lose a signal, or that the signal indicator would show a weakened signal, when the smartphone is held in a certain way -- particularly if it was held in the left hand.

Several new iPhone owners confirmed the reception problem in a string of more than messages posted to a thread on Apple's iPhone 4 support forum. "Signal drops from 4-5 bars to 'searching for signal...' when I hold it in my palm or cover up the line on the lower left side of the phone," reported a user identified as "yoshjosh" on the thread. "I understand that cell signals may degrade when you cover up the antenna, but I have never seen anything this severe, and I'm not holding the phone differently than I think most people hold their phones. This is a real issue."

Apple acknowledged that holding the iPhone 4 may result in a diminished signal that could make it difficult to make and maintain calls or retain a data connection. However, it maintained that it is same with every wireless phone.

"Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone," Apple said in a statement. Apple CEO Steve Jobs however called it a non issue.

Google searches truce in China

SHANGHAI/BEIJING: Google Inc said it will end the automatic redirection of users from its China portal within the next 24 to 48 hours, while Beijing kept silent on whether the move would allow Google to keep its China business.

Google said late on Monday that it would end the automatic rerouting of China users to its Hong Kong search site, which gives unfiltered search results, after Beijing told the company its China Internet operating licence would not be renewed if it continued.

China has so far declined to directly comment on Google's move, which analysts say is a sign the company wants to fight for its China presence after warning in January it might quit the country over censorship concerns and after suffering a hacker attack it said came from within China.

A senior government official on Wednesday said he did not know the specific details of Google's new approach, but reiterated the government's long-standing position that foreign companies operating in the country must respect local rules.

"We've long said that to develop in China, you must abide by Chinese laws," Wang Chen, head of the Information Office of the State Council told reporters. "Our stance is very clear in those statements."

Every China-based website needs an Internet Content Provider (ICP) licence from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which must be renewed on a yearly basis. Google's ICP licence ends in 2012 but comes up for renewal on Wednesday.

Without the licence, Google would not be able to run a search website in China. Some users visiting Google.cn now get a webpage with the Google logo and search box, but clicking anywhere on the page brings them to the Hong Kong search site.

Analysts said the non-renewal of Google's ICP licence would yank the company back to the years when Google had virtually no presence in China. It would also make it tougher for Google to see its other business licences renewed.

"If they lose this licence, the trend is moving in the wrong direction for Google, it seems likely they will have trouble with their other licences in China as well," said T.R. Harrington, chief executive of search consulting firm Darwin Marketing.

Edward Yu, chief executive of technology research firm Analysys International, said Google China's search traffic and revenue had stablised in the second-quarter and advertisers were returning to the company.

However, Yu said Google not getting its ICP licence would be disastrous for its search business in China. It is unclear how China will respond to Google's landing page reminding users to click through to its unfiltered search site.

It is possible China could block the URL of the landing site.

"It's the worst case scenario, if users can't access Google.cn and there is no reminder page for them to click through to Google Hong Kong, there will be an impact on traffic and in turn advertisers," Yu said.

China's search market was worth 7.15 billion yuan ($1.05 billion) in 2009, with search leader Baidu Inc (BIDU.O) dominating at around 60 percent while Google had 30 percent.

Ranbir and Shammi Kapoor
Imtiaz Ali is back with a new story and the stars of the yester year. After getting Neetu Kapoor to work with Rishi Kapoor in Love Aaj Kal, the director has worked his charm again and has convinced Shammi Kapoor. Shammi will be returning to the sliver screen to make a guest appearance in the movie of his grandnephew Ranbir. Imtiaz is making his next movie Rockstar along with Ranbir Kapoor.
A close source revealed, “It was not easy to get Shammiji to agree with a role in the movie. Due to his medical conditions, he undergoes dialysis thrice a week. However, Imtiaz has made all arrangements so that the veteran star is able to shoot comfortably. The schedule with Shammiji will take seven days to film. Since he is not in a condition to shoot at a stretch, Imitiaz has decided to shoot his scenes in bits and parts. So, Shammiji will take a break after every day of shooting.”
Shammi Kapoor was very surprised when asked about this role. He said politely, “My dear, nothing has been finalized yet. We are working out the possibilities, given my circumstances.” Shammi was certainly very excited about working with Ranbir Kapoor and said, “I would love to do this role if I was healthy. Ranbir is a superbactor, wonderful dancer, talented and handsome. I am proud to be his grand uncle.”

Lolo is very busy these days with her back to back shooting schedules, it has become impossible for her to take time out for her sister Karisma’s birthday. In fact, she has become so busy that Kareena’s mother is packing her bags for her further schedules. When asked Kareena about this she said, “I am shooting in Hyderabad till June 23. I land in Mumbai at 9 pm and from the domestic airport, go to international terminal. I board a flight to Marrakech, Morocco for Saif’s Agent Vinod in a couple of hours after that. It has been so hectic that I won’t have time to go home and pack my stuff. In fact, I have asked to pack all my stuff and meet me at the airport.” Kareena is very sad that she will not won’t be there for Karisma’s birthday. “I have asked Lolo and Samaira to come to the airport for half an hour so we can sit and chat in the car. I don’t know if Samiara can come so late at night but I would love to have her come. I am feeling terrible that I won’t see her for more than a month,” added Bebo. Kareena is very busy till the year end. She said, “I have three films to complete Golmaal 3, Ra.One and Agent Vinod. Then Madhur’s film will start in December. Then I am endorsing 11 brands and have performed at every award show this year. In September and October, I get busy with the promotion of Golmaal 3 and Karan’s Stepmom. I have requested Sharukh to keep a schedule of Ra.One in Mumbai so I can be there for promoting and he has agreed.” Lately there has been a buzz that Kareena is signed for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next project Heera Mandi. Looks like Lola has her hands full!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan More Pics
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on Raavan, Abhishek Bachchan and Mani Ratnam

Raavan has been a gruelling experience for you?
Why just me? Everyone in the film has gone through an equal amount of hardships to create a film we all believe in. There we were, getting drenched in the rain, and Mani Ratnam, Santosh Sivan . ..everyone was there facing the weather. We were all friends in the project. Everyone was there for one another. We could joke and say it was like an adventure sport, or a video game while we were making our way through the most impossible conditions. But we knew what the truth was.

Were you prepared for the severe hardships when you read the script?
It was still a bit of shock and surprise when we had to face the climatic conditions in the jungles. On top of that Mani loves to make on-the-spot changes. He improvises all the time. He doesn’t want to strictly follow the written word. He’s a master of creating magical moments out of the seemingly ordinary. What he does is incredible. Just the pleasure of working with him again (after Iruvar) was amazing.

But for a lady to be climbing those slippery rocks ....
Really (laughs), we didn’t know how slippery those rocks would be. There was this huge waterfall where we shot a lot. One never thought one would leap down those heights in and around the waterfall. Of course we were wired. But once you’re going down there’s no control. The rocks were so mossy, we had no control over our movements. We were climbing so close to the waterfall we could feel its power. It was the power of Nature in all its glory.

How could you focus on emoting while doing such dangerous stunts?
That’s magic of the camera, the magic of cinema. As for getting the emotions right, you know Mani Ratnam. Do you think he would relent until he got the emotions he wanted? We’d go through the most incredibly impossible scene. Then he’d come up to us and say, ‘I’ve got a better idea. Let’s do the whole thing again.’ I was like, ‘Are you for real? Do you know what we’re doing? And we’ve another version to capture before the light fades.’ I’d do it in Hindi and then do it all over again in Tamil.

Was the scale of your emotions higher in Tamil?
I haven’t seen the Tamil film. No time! The nuances alter from one language to the same. But the emotions were the same. Some of the lines were changed to show a difference in culture. What would seem theatrical in Hindi is natural in Tamil. But I didn’t consciously move into a different zone in the two languages. Our camereman Santosh Sivan was so innovative. The changes in lighting and mood were done by him. He was having a party while we were trying to get it right in two languages. He doesn’t only create fabulous images. He creates a magic in the language of the film. You can be sure that Mani and Santosh will together bring it all together finally. You know, Manikandan was doing the cinematography earlier. But you can’t tell where and when Santosh took over.

You actually dubbed your own lines in Tamil?
Oh yes, as far as dubbing is concerned I’ve come a long way. I remember during my first film Iruvar in Tamil, I panicked at the language. Now of course I am far more confident. But two films simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil meant pressure full-on. Until we were on the sets none of us knew what pressures we were getting into. After a while Mani was giving me scenes on the sets. Then he’d humour me saying, ‘Come come let’s do it.’It was the toughest thing I’ve ever done. I’d be standing there, having just completed a harrowing scene with Abhishek, and then without a minute’s pause I’d have to do the same scene with Vikram. We were all passionate about the project to the point of being obsessive. Everyone in the crew was there in the jungles throughout. We would tell one another that we were on a picnic or a safari adventure. But we knew what we were going through.

Would you do it again if you have to?
While we were shooting Raavan we felt the situation was impossible and we didn’t know how we’d get through it. But now that we did ...yes, I’d do it again! Just before the film’s release we all met up and we kept looking at each other thinking the same thing. ‘Is it all done already?’ And we kept saying, ‘We can do it any time again.’ And Mani was like, ‘You guys are crazy.’

You feel ill with serious viral infections during the film?
It just got widely reported. Even Abhishek and Vikram fell ill. These things happen when working under tough conditions. Mani got it. His wife Suhasini visited us. And she too got it. Such things do happen specially when you have to remain drenched from head to toe. During childhood we were taught to keep our head dry. And here I was getting drenched from early morning till late night. There was no point in drying myself because I was soaked in seconds.

Curiously you shot with two of the finest directors Mani Ratnam and Sanjay Leela Bhansali almost simultaneously, Mani completely outdoors and Sanjay fully on the sets.
And both so fulfilling in their own way. Let me tell you, I consider myself blessed. I’ve worked repeatedly with both. And both have taken my acting abilities seriously.

Acer to launch 8 Gateway models

Acerlaptop-big.jpg
Acer Laptop
KOLKATA: Acer, the world’s second largest PC maker, plans to focus on its Gateway brand in the Indian market to compete in the premium segment dominated by Hewlett-Packard and Sony Vaio.

While Acer India till lately was selling the Gateway range through Tata Group’s electronics retail chain Croma, it now plans to sell the product through its own pan-India distribution network and multi-brand retail chains.

The company expects the Gateway brand will contribute around 15% to its over-all PC sales in a year.

The company also plans to soon launch 8-10 models in the Gateway range, which will be positioned in the all-day computing segment. Acer believes this strategy will help it to reach the second spot in the Indian PC market by this year, which is currently enjoyed by Dell.

“Gateway has been a strong brand in the US where it contributes 50% to sales and in other developed markets like Japan, Singapore and Australia the contribution is around 30-35%. We now want to grow the brand at a similar pace in India,” Acer India chief marketing officer S Rajendran said.

Incidentally, the Gateway brand was launched in India through the Croma retail chain a year back. The company used to sell some 650-700 units a month.

It now plans to sell it through the 270-odd Acer brand stores and top 70 multi-brand PC stores. “The Gateway range will have a 3% price premium over the Acer range and 5-8% less than a Hewlett-Packard or Vaio. The brand will appeal to the style conscious consumers,” said Mr Rajendran.

SMS: New dating violence weapon

sms.jpg
NEW DELHI: A new weapon of dating violence has come up in the form of text messages, which can be vile, constant, and menacing.

With cell phones and unlimited texting plans easily available among the young, there is a growing trend of what is known as "textual harassment".

"It's gotten astonishingly worse in the last two years," the Washington Post quoted Jill Murray, who has written several books on dating violence and speaks on the topic nationally, as saying. "Especially for those who have grown up in digital times, it's part and parcel of every abusive dating relationship now," she said.

According to the paper, the harassed often feel compelled to answer the messages, whether they are one-word insults or 3 am demands. For some, 100 or more texts arrive in a day in class, at the dinner table, or in movie theatres. "Harassment is just easier now, and it's even more persistent and constant, with no letting up," the post quoted Claire Kaplan, director of sexual and domestic violence services at the University of Virginia, as saying.

Kacey Kirkland, a victim services specialist with the Fairfax County Police Department, told the paper that he has seen textual harassment in almost every form: Threats. Rumors. Lies. Late-night questions. "The advances in technology are assisting the perpetrators in harassing and stalking and threatening their victims," Kirkland said.

Harassment by text is only one facet of abusive relationships, which often involve contact in person, by phone, by e-mail, and through Facebook or other social networking sites.

"What technology offers is irrefutable evidence of the abuse," the paper quoted Cindy Southworth, founder of the Safety Net Project on technology at the National Network to End Domestic Violence, as saying.

HCL raises Rs 585 cr for education

NEW DELHI: HCL founder-chairman Shiv Nadar raised around Rs 585 crore by selling about 2.5% stake in HCL Technologies on and said the proceeds will be donated towards philanthropic investments in India's education sector.

The Shiv Nadar Foundation, launched by Mr Nadar, will use this money for expanding its philanthropic efforts across thousands of schools and colleges in the country.

The stake sale was done by HCL Corp, the holding company of software services firm HCL Technologies and computer hardware company HCL Infosystems.

It is headed by Mr Nadar’s daughter Roshni. As of March 31 this year, the Nadar family held around 50.27% stake in HCL Technologies.

HCL Corp sold 16.75 million shares of HCL Technologies in two tranches on BSE on Thursday. About 8.37 million shares changed hands at a volume-weighted average price of Rs 347.98 and another 8.37 million shares at Rs 350.79.

Private fund house Citigroup Global Markets Mauritius bought a chunk of the shares. Citigroup and Deutsche Bank AG are learnt to have assisted HCL Corp in the transaction.

The first-generation entrepreneurs of the Indian IT industry have been driving their philanthropy agenda through focused initiatives. While Wipro chairman Azim Premji’s foundation focuses on improving the quality of primary education in the country, the Infosys Foundation works on rural development and social rehabilitation.

The Shiv Nadar Foundation was established to focus on areas related to transformational education. The work on the foundation began in 1994 with the establishment of SSN Trust. Later, the name of the foundation was changed to Shiv Nadar Foundation.

The total quantum of donations, as disclosed by listed companies, has grown over the past few years. In April, Infosys Technologies chief mentor NR Narayana Murthy and his family donated $5.2 million to Harvard University and Harvard University Press to establish a new publication series called The Murty Classical Library of India.

Early this year, 70-year-old Vineet Nayyar, managing director of IT services firm Tech Mahindra, donated a third of his shares in the company worth over Rs 30 crore to Essel Social Welfare Foundation, a Delhi-based charitable organisation.

Just three firms—Reliance Industries, Jindal Steel & Power and Jaiprakash Associates—had donated more than Rs 30 crore each for the year ended March 31, 2009. HCL Technologies shares closed at Rs 358.85, down 3.90% from the previous close, on BSE on Thursday.

World's biggest gold coin fetches over €3m

VIENNA: A Spanish precious metals trading company bought the world's largest gold coin for 3.27 million euros, its exact material worth, from the estate of an insolvent investment firm at a rare auction in Vienna on Friday.

The 100 kg (220.5 lb) piece, one of only five Canadian $1,000,000 Maple Leaf coins the Royal Canadian Mint has ever produced, was snapped up immediately in a written bid from ORO direct, a gold trading company based in Madrid.

There were no counter offers in an auction room packed with more journalists than potential buyers. It sold for the catalogue sum, the coin's pure gold value based on Friday's market price. This was four times its face value.

The auction was ordered by the administrator of Austrian investment group AvW Invest, which filed for insolvency in May after its owner and chief executive was arrested on suspicion of fraud, breach of trust and other charges.

AvW had acquired the coin in 2007, joining an exclusive club of owners including Queen Elizabeth, who is also displayed on one side of the coin, two unidentified investors in Dubai and one who is so reclusive even his or her residence is unknown.

AvW had lent its coin, 53 cm (21 inches) in diameter and 3 cm thick, to Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum where it had been on display as part of its coin collection.

Its purity is 99.999 percent, the purest type in the market.

The Royal Canadian Mint launched the coin in 2007 to showcase its production facilities and steal the entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the world's biggest gold coin.

That title had previously been held by the Austrian mint, who in 2004 produced fifteen 100,000-euro coins weighing 1,000 troy ounces (31.1 kg) to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its best-selling Philharmonics coin.

Find the Song Name Without Knowing the Lyrics

It happens all the time. You are sitting in a restaurant with friends or driving to work and there’s some beautiful music playing on the FM radio station. You would love to buy a copy of that music album for yourself but the problem is that you didn’t get the lyrics so how do you find out the name of that song.
“What’s the name of that song ? I don’t remember the lyrics”
Search engines like Google or Bing won’t be of much help unless you know a couple of words from the song lyrics or have some clue about the name of the artist or the band. How do you then identify the name of that lovely song?
Well, here are some of the best music recognition services that can help you discover song names without having to know the lyrics. You may use them to identify music playing from the radio, TV, Internet or that CD playing in the bar.

1. Find Music with your Mobile Phone

Identify Music tracks with Shazam1a. Shazam – Shazam is a mobile application that you may use to find song names from your iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Android or your Nokia S60 phone. You may also use Shazam on an iPod Touch provided you have an external microphone.
Simply install the Shazam application, hold your phone towards the audio source and hit the Tag button to let Shazam identify the playing music. Shazam works only with pre-recorded music and not with live performances.
The free version of Shazam will help you identify up to 5 different track per month while Shazam Encore, the paid version, offers unlimited tracking for $4.99. If the tune cannot be recognized, there’s no charge. If you are in the UK, you can use just about any mobile phone to recognize music with Shazam – just dial 2580 and hold your phone to the music.
1b. MusicID – Hold your iPhone up to some music and MusicID will tell you what song is playing. It’s a $3 iPhone App available worldwide but if you are on AT&T, you may also use your Blackberry, Windows Mobile or any Java phone to identify music with MusicID.
Like Shazam, MusicID works only with pre-recorded music and they also have an SMS based service for people in the US that doesn’t require any downloads – just dial a short code, hold your phone up to some music and you’ll get a text message with the result.

2. Find song names using your own voice

2a. Midomi – If you have a tune that’s stuck in your head, just grab a microphone, hum that tune yourself and Midomi will be able tell you what that song is. Alternatively, you may play a short recording of that “unknown” track for Midomi to identify its name.
Unlike Shazam which is a mobile app, Midomi offers a web interface where you can can hum or sing for about 10 seconds and the service will then show you a list of matching songs. For best results, keep the volume bar in the green and avoid background noise.
Midomi is free to use online, but it also offers mobile apps for iPhone, Android, Nokia Ovi and Windows Mobile phones. You can identify songs by holding your phone up to a speaker or by singing / humming the melody into the phone itself.

3. Record a short clip to identify the music

3a. AudioTag – If you have a short recording of a song on your computer or your mobile phone, you may use the online music recognition service at AudioTag to figure out the exact name of that song.
You can upload a short audio snippet (or even a whole song) and Audio will try to identify the track title by comparing the audio to its own music database. For best results, you should either take a slice from the middle of the song or upload the whole song and the recognition engine will choose slices randomly by itself.
This can be especially useful if you can record a portion of the song on your mobile device, and then check out the song’s information whenever you go online.

4. Identify Music with help of humans

what song name 4a. WatZatSong – When computers fail to identify the song that you are looking for, you can take the help of human being who may have an idea about that song.
WatZatSong (“What’s that song?”) is a social site where you can upload a short MP3 audio recording of the song (or record yourself by humming) and other members of the site can then help you guess the exact song name. The suggestions won’t come instantly but you can make their task a bit easier by proving more details about the song like the language in which it is sung or the music style.
You can cross-post the same WatZatSong  request to other social sites like Twitter, Facebook, etc. so your entire network can help you in the search.
4b. Name My Tune – Sing or hum a short clip of the song you are trying to find the name of. Once you are done recording and enter the Genre and Era that you think the song most likely fits in. They’ll send you an email when other people on that site are able to recognize your tune.

5. Use a virtual keyboard to find the song name

5a. Musipedia – With Musipedia, you can search for a song by either playing it on a virtual piano keyboard or by whistling it to the computer using any microphone.
Musipedia is styled after Wikipedia and works best at finding classical music. Unlike Shazam which can will only find songs that exactly match the recording, Musipedia can identify all music that contain a particular melody that you just recorded by humming or through the computer keyboard.
5b. MelodyCatcher – If you can play the tune on a virtual keyboard, MelodyCatcher can help you find the name of the song tune you’re looking for.
With a simple Java-based onscreen keyboard, simply use your mouse to enter the melody, click search, and MelodyCatcher will show you a list of matching songs from across the web. You do not need to enter the full melody: the first 5-7 notes will usually be sufficient to identify a melody.

Get Free Access to Online Newspaper Articles with a Google Hack

Online newspaper sites like the Financial Times require users to sign-in if they want to read more than one article on their site. The New York Times too had such a restriction in place earlier but they seem to have dropped that requirement now.
The Wall Street Journal, on the other hand, is a subscription-based site. They do offer free access to some of news stories but all the premium content is behind a pay-wall and therefore available only to paid subscribers.
Since these newspaper websites are part of the "First Click Free" program, someone visiting them via Google search can read the first page of the story without registering or subscribing. The first click is therefore "free" but the user will have to sign-in or register to read further.
First Click Free & Google Visitors
However, due to a possible bug in the implementation, the registration prompt gets bypassed for Google visitors giving them free access to all the news articles -- even the premium content meant for subscribers.
It works like this. You first copy the web address of any news article that is behind the registration firewall and paste that URL into the Google Search box. Now click the first Google result and you’ll be able to read the full text of the corresponding story without registering or subscribing.

Websites and Words That Are Blocked in China

This infographic contains a list of censored keywords (highlighted in red) and websites that are currently blocked in China.
Censored Keywords in China
There are generally two kinds of internet censorship in China – they either completely block a website from users or they instruct local search engines to modify search results for certain keywords.
For instance, sites like IMDB and BBC are inaccessible from within China and some of them may not even appear in the search results of local search engines like Baidu or Sohu. The next form of censorship is keyword based. If you search for a censored keyword (say “Human Rights”) in a Chinese search engine, you’ll see few or no results.
InfoBeautiful has turned this list of censored keywords and websites that are currently blocked in China into a nice visualization and the more interesting part is that image looks like the map of China itself.

Google is Reducing Share of AdSense Publishers

The latest earnings report from Google has some not-so-good news for web publishers (bloggers included) who are monetizing their online content through the Google AdSense program.
Google AdSense - Revenue Share
While Google has never disclosed the exact percentage of revenue that it shares with AdSense publishers, once can easily derive that number using the earnings report that are released at the end of each quarter.
The “Google Network Revenues” section reflects the total revenue that was generated though AdSense while the “Traffic Acquisition Costs” section reflects the total amount that was paid by Google to AdSense publishers. To know the approximate revenue share, simply divide TAC with the total AdSense revenue.
Here’s a quick chart comparing these numbers for the year 2009. The percentage of revenue that Google is sharing with AdSense publishers has reduced from 75% in Q1 to 72% in Q4 2009. That’s not a very exciting news.

Q1 ‘09 Q2 ‘09 Q3 ‘09 Q4 ‘09
What Google earned from AdSense (in billion) $1.64 $1.68 $1.80 $2.04
What Google paid to AdSense publishers (in billion) $1.23 $1.24 $1.33 $1.47
Percentage share of AdSense Publishers 75.0% 73.8% 73.9% 72.1%
The following charts have numbers from the last eight quarters.

How Strong is your Password?

This is common knowledge; you should use a combination of alphabets, numerical digits, and special characters (!, @) to create strong passwords. Yet, the most commonly used password on the Internet is 123456 followed by 12345 – see full list.
The following visualization courtesy CXO categorizes some of the popular passwords based on their strength – it might appear a little funny but lot of people are actually using such simple, easy-to-guess passwords for their online accounts.

How Strong is your Password?

Online services like Google’s Gmail or WordPress have password meters that calculate the strength of password as you type more characters into the box. Microsoft too offers an online tool that will instantly tell if your password is strong or weak.
There’s however one downside with most of these password checking tools – they’ll tell you that your password is weak (and thus easy to crack) but you won’t know why the password string has been labeled weak and what you can do to strengthen it.
Enter Password Meter – this is an online tool that will not only rate your password’s strength but will offer clues on what you kind of characters can you add or remove to improve the password’s strength. For instance, the complexity of password “Hell@Wor1d!” can be improved by removing consecutive lowercase letters.

AdSense Tip – Attract New Advertisers to your Site

Google AdSense is an auction based advertising system so your advertising revenue (or CPMs) will automatically go up if more advertisers choose to target your website.
The system, in simple English, works like eBay. You (the website owner) are selling ad space and the buyers (in this case, advertisers) are competing against each other to grab that space. The bid amount will therefore increase as more buyers enter the auction process thus benefiting the seller (you).

Increase your Site’s Visibility on the Google Ad Network

Advertisers are using tools like DoubleClick Ad Planner to determine which websites on the Google Ad Network they should target and you therefore need to ensure that your website is both visible and discoverable in these tools.
For instance, here’s a public listing of my blog on Ad Planner. This report is like a marketing brochure that you are handing out to an unknown number of prospective clients daily through Google and therefore it always should have updated information.
Advertisers can see the type of ads that are accepted on the site, the traffic details (pulled from Google Analytics), the topics that are covered by the site (categories) and other information that will help them quickly decide whether or not they should include the site in their campaigns.
In this video, Vijay Vachani of the AdSense team will walk you through the steps that are required to add your website to Google Ad Planner.

Step 1. If you have not added your website to Google Webmaster Tools yet, do that first. Sign-in to Webmaster Tools using your Google Account and add the site URL.
Step 2. Once your site is verified, go to the Publisher Center of Google Ad Planner and include the site** to your Ad Planner profile. If you have just added your site to Webmaster Tools, it may not immediately show up in Ad Planner.
Step 3. Finally, click the “Edit Site Info” link to assign a good description and relevant categories to your site. Google will automatically present a rough estimate of your site’s traffic to advertisers but you can give them a more accurate picture by allowing Ad Planner to use data* from your Google Analytics account.
In addition to creating your own Ad Planner Profile, you may also want to implement these three simple yet effective suggestions by Lauren Weitzman to attract advertisers:
  • Always allow text and image ads on your site.
  • Create channels for placement targeting so advertisers can target specific slots on your site (see #16).
  • Always put the main ad unit above the fold.
[*] When you share Google Analytics data with DoubleClick Ad Planner, the same data may also be displayed in Google Trends for Websites.
[**] You might want to use Chrome or Firefox when using Google Ad Planner because some of the features of the site don’t work in IE.

Send your Facebook Updates to Grandma via Post

Reading Facebook Newsletter

Imagine this. Your parents, your cousins and everyone else in the family is active on Facebook but for your grandparents who either don’t use a computer yet or find Facebook too confusing and therefore stay away from it.
You don’t want your sweet grandma to miss all the family updates because she is not on Facebook but how to keep her in the loop without the computer? Well, the good old way – print your status updates and any photos that you may have recently uploaded to Facebook on paper and send them to her via snail mail just like a newspaper.
Don’t worry – you don’t have to do anything manually.
There’s an interesting Facebook service called PostEgram that will automatically create full-colored printed newsletters of your status updates and your Facebook photos and it will send them to your loved ones via post.
It works something like this. You authorize the app with Facebook Connect so that it can access your pictures and status updates. Then select profiles of your Facebook contacts who you want to include in the newsletter. Finally, pay via PayPal and you are done.
MakeFacebook Newsletter
The service starts at $5 per month but you can use the coupon code “BLISS” and they’ll deliver the first issue of your “Facebook Newsletter” for free but only to addresses in US and Canada.
Not just grannies, you may also use this service to share your Facebook status and photos with family members and friends who are on Facebook but are currently in locations where don’t have Internet access. Thanks @nttd.

Simple Solutions to Common Windows Problems

Simple Solutions to Common Windows Problems:

Learn about some free software utilities that will help you fix the most common Windows problems. They are all compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Fix Windows Problems with Free Tools

Q1. I am trying to delete a file from my desktop but the computer won’t let me do that. Instead, it throws me an error message saying that the file /folder is in use by another program or user.
A: You can either reboot your computer in Safe mode to delete that file or, if you want something more simple, get Unlocker. It’s a free utility that will let you close all the processes that have possibly locked the file and once they are closed, you can then safely delete the file.
Q2. I am trying to play a video file on my computer but the media player says that I am missing certain codecs.
A: You can use a tool like Video Inspector to determine which audio and video codecs are required to play the video file on your computer. Alternatively, you can download a codec package like the K-Lite Pack that will let you play virtually any audio and video format on your computer.
Q3. I am running out of disk space on my Windows computer. How can I remove all the unnecessary files from the computer and recover some disk space?
A: There are three things you can do here:
  • Open the Run box and type “cleanmgr” to open the built-in Disk Cleanup utility. It will remove all the temp files and the unnecessary system files that you no longer need.
  • Use WinDirStat to determine where all your disk space has gone. Sometimes files are hidden in sub-directories that you can safely move to other drives or even delete them permanently (more options).
  • Use Duplicate Cleaner to identify and delete all the duplicate files on your hard drives. You can move the duplicates to the recycle bin or, if you want to play safe, to any another folder from where they can be easily recovered.
Q4. My computer takes lot of time to boot-up. I checked the “start-up” folder in the Windows start menu and there aren’t any applications out there.
A:  Type “msconfig” in the Run box to open the “System Configuration” tool and then switch to the “Start-up” tab. Disable all the programs that you don’t need to run during start-up. If you are a power user, you may also switch to the “Services” tab and disable all the unnecessary services.
Autoruns is another excellent utility that shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login.
Q5. I am trying to uninstall a program from my computer but the standard add-remove programs is not letting me through.
A: You can use the free Revo Uninstaller utility to remove every single trace of any program from your computer. Revo can also remove entries from the Windows Registry that may have been left by previous un-installation routines.
Q6. My Windows crashed with a “Blue Screen.” Why?
A: You really need to get in touch with a geek to debug the cryptic Blue Screen errors (aka “Blue Screen of Death”) but if you are lucky, a free utility called BlueScreenView can provide vital clues. Blue Screen View will scan the Windows dump files to determine the device drivers that possibly caused the crash.
Q7. It takes ages to copy files in Windows from one folder to another. The situation is marginally better in Windows 7 (over Vista) but still, is there a way to copy files faster?
A: You can use an external file copying utility like TeraCopy or even RichCopy – they’ll not only copy /move files across drives faster but you can also resume broken file transfers (similiar to FTP operations).
Q8. I think I deleted a file by mistake. Can I recover it?
A: Recuva is a free software that will scan your hard drives, USB stick and other external drives for any deleted files that it can possibly recover. It may not work in all cases especially when you securely deleted a file.
Q9. Every time I copy something new to the Windows clipboard, the previous content gets erased. Can I make it permanent?
A: You can use Ditto, a free utility that sort-of adds memory to your Windows Clipboard. You can copy anything to the clipboard and it will stay there as long as you want.
Q10. How do I protect files and folders on my computer?
A: While there are free tools like Hide Folder that let you easily protect files and folders with a password, use TrueCrypt if you want a more secure solution. The obvious downside with a program like TrueCrypt is that if you forget the password, it is nearly impossible to retrieve the protected files.

The Best Selling Computer Books at O’Reilly

Top Computer and Programming Books
O’Reilly Media, publishers of the popular cookbooks and the ‘Missing Manual’ series, have released a list of their best selling computer and programming related books for the previous week.
Book sales figures, they say, are a good indicator of “technology trends.” If that’s true, we pretty much know what software and programming languages are currently popular among consumers and developers respectively.
There are at least five Windows 7 related books in the best-sellers list while another five are about Microsoft Office 2007 (Office 2010 is not available to consumers yet). In the programming category, books on Python, jQuery, Java and PHP with MySQL are among the top-sellers. O’reilly also has a book on Twitter, written by Tim O’reilly himself, but it’s Facebook that made it to the top list.
The book sale data is provided by Nielsen BookScan, a service that tracks books sales at all major book retailers including Amazon, Borders, and others.

Turkish Bloggers mock the ban on Google!
YouTube has been blocked in Turkey for long and now, according to some news reports, the government has also blocked Google Docs, Google Books, Google Analytics, Google Translate and most other Google services in the country.
Unhappy at the ban, a group of Turkish bloggers has created an interesting poster mocking the censors!

Take Microsoft Office Anywhere!

Microsoft Office Web Apps lets you use Microsoft Office programs from anywhere. Nice ad!

If Microsoft Switched to Google Apps..

Imagine the impossible. If Microsoft switched to Google Apps today, they could save around $277 million in costs per year, the employees at Microsoft will become 2.8 times more productive and they will have around 2.5 million extra hours per year to accomplish more productive tasks.

That’s according to a report card [PDF] from Google.

Gone Google!
Google has released an online calculator at gonegoogle.com that estimates how much businesses, big and small, could potentially save if they moved from a desktop environment to Google Apps and Gmail running on the cloud.

The calculator makes certain assumptions but you can always edit those values based on your actual numbers. Good fun!

How to Capture Videos of Google Earth

How to Capture Videos of Google Earth

This is a short video animation captured using the free version of Google Earth.
The video in high-resolution (720p HD) and the animation plays very smoothly but before I share the actual software that I used to record this movie clip, please read the guidelines for using content from Google Earth and Google Maps:
[Offline use] If your proposed offline use of Google Maps or Google Earth is limited in scope, the concept of ‘fair use’ may apply
[Online use] You do not need permission to create and display video created from Google Maps or Google Earth in a video, whether hosted on your own site or through a service such as YouTube. You must purchase a copy of Google Earth Pro if exporting motion video, because screen capturing is not allowed.
If your usage meets the ‘fair use’ criteria, you can use the free Wegame client to record movies of Google Earth on your Windows machine. Wegame, a popular tool for recording video games, was recently updated and it now supports full-screen recording at 30 frames-per-second for smooth video.
Unlike most other screencasting software where you just hit the Record hotkey to start recording, it may take a couple of tries for you to get comfortable with the Wegame capture process.
Recording Google Earth
Launch the Wegame client and connect with your online account – you don’t have to upload your movies online but you still need to login for the software to work.
Then launch Google Earth and you’ll see a green square box inside the Earth program. Hit F6 and the square should disappear meaning the animations are getting recorded. Hit F6 to stop the capture and the recorded video will get saved in your My Documents folder.
If you are recording Google Earth animations on a slow machine, try lowering the frame rate to 15 or 20 and also switch to Half-screen recording. The video is saved in Windows Media format that you can play in almost every media player.

When Robots Play a Game of Pool

You’ve got to see this video to believe it.
Willow Garage, a company that develops software for robotics applications, have taught their robot to play a game of pool and they’ve done this in just a week!
There’re no humans assisting the robot – he can hold the cue and select shots completely on his own. Very impressive!
Willow Garage was founded by Scott Hassan who earlier launched eGroups, a service that was later acquired by Yahoo! and is now known as Yahoo! Groups.
